We've always been fascinated by japaneese pop-culture's strong bright colors and hyper-cuteness - a derivative thereof is the popularirty of custom handsewn plush puppies/dolls called 'softies'.
Here's a short walkthrough of some of the coolest and cutest softies we've seen. In order of appearance (See the photos below):

Ugly Dolls: When you're talking softies you can't ignore Ugly Dolls. They've been around since 2001, and it appears as if they've defined the genre! Today they appear a bit boring and basic compared to the more 'evolved' softies later in this post.
The Ugly Dolls is the lovechild of cartoonist David Horvath and his girlfriend Sun-Min Kim who crafted the first 1500 Ugly Dolls by hand. During this great interview at crowndozen.com they mention a guy called Mumbleboy, who sold designer plush-animals in the New York art-scene in the late 90's. Maybe the father of the plush-animal trend? The image of the Ugly Dolls at the beach is from Fuzirella's Flickr stream.
Sciapataus: Sciapataus is designer softies with a big D. Very simple design but the knitted clothes add something extra - a bit overpriced though!!
Michal Wright: Next up is Michal Wright - an illustrator from Southern California with a cartoon/animation-like style which is reflected in her plush-dolls. See her Plush Work at Flickr.
Cotton Monsters: Cotton Monsters is the brainchild of artist Jennifer Strunge from Baltimore, Maryland. She makes the plush monsters in all sizes and shapes. Mostly inspired by life in the oceans. See the Cotton Monsters Etsy Shop.
My Tiny Star: Star Primm (a house-wife from the US) is displaying a nice softie owl-set on Flickr
Dolls for Friends: Dolls for Friends is designed by husband and wife design team Erin and Jill. This is really a step up the ladder. Great fabrics, nice photography and surprising variation. Not too girlish, not too boyish, not too artsy and not too common! - just perfect. Go see for yourself at Dolls for Friends Flickr Stream and Dolls for Friends Etsy store.
PlushPlex: No great colors and fabrics but a cool idea. Plushplex's softies are ninja's masked as animals. - and apparently Plushplex is a male only operation!!
Revoluzza: Berlin based Suse Bauer has a very flat and old-school softie-style. But the details are amazing and takes the flat softies to a new level. Revoluzza is her creative alter ego. See all her works at her flickr-set Puppen/dolls.
Talkproof: A nice flickr set by an incognito softie crafter from Fremont, California who calls herself Casscette and her Etsy shop goes by the name Talkproof.
Kit Lane:Last but not least is Kit Lane with her very own niche: Needle Felted Woollen softies. Enjoy her Etsy shop and her Flickr stream.

If you know a great softie crafter that's been left out of this list, then please leave a comment! :-)

We would love to hear your opinion. Leave your comment below...

Wow! this is a great list of some of my favourite softy artists.
Not sure if this counts, or even if it's allowed (blush!) but I would like to submit my own softies collection.
Please have a look at my Flickr set here:
